Using the /SOS Switch
You can add the /SOS switch to the Boot.ini file to have NTLDR display the kernel and
device driver
names while they are being loaded. Use this switch if Windows 2000 does not start up
and you think a
driver is missing or corrupted. For information about changing Boot.ini switches, see
"Boot.ini
Switches" earlier in this
chapterhttp://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/techinfo/reskit/en/Core/fnbb_str_inik.htm
Or try creating boot floppy (from another W2K machine) boot to it, copy NTLDR &
NTDETECTD.COM to
HD - edit boot.ini?
good luck.

I'm interested as well. But my problem is because my old machine got fried
by lightening, so I can't go back and make the change. Interesting side
note, when I tried to put the drive in an old Dell Pentium I, I got the very
same message. When I tried to put the drive in an old Compaq Deskpro 4000
Pentium I I got the message "NTLDR IS MISSING". Any ideas on solving that
message?

Put it back in the original machine or a similar machine, and load the
driver for that IDE controller.

I've seen this problem before but haven't learned how to fix it without
formatting yet. When replacing a motherboard in a Win2k (pro or server)
machine, Windows will not boot for the IDE controller is different from the
old motherboard, thus you get a blue screen that that error on it. Does
anyone know how to fix this w/o formatting?
Thanks,
Paul
