Some time ago I read an interesting essay to the effect of, "Is the thing you're sending across the wire much more complex than a string? Then you have failed; go buy another subscription to MSDN." It doesn't apply all the time, but it's always good food for thought when I find myself starting to get carried away with some newfangled software stack to pass messages between processes.
