I am taking it that when you did the cifs setup, you joined the first domain?
If you are cifs only then you might be able to get by with using the altSecurityIdentities attribute. It's been awhile but I think there are problems if you use NFS qtrees. Question: Are the forests in the same timezone? Could be a case of smb signing.
