Same sort of thoughts I had when I saw this setup - the drive to push down
hardware costs obviously puts the strain onto the network, where they have
already got a heavy strain from roaming profiles, complicated GPOs and
folder redirection. They are putting in virtual systems now which is going
to put more emphasis onto network performance, I should think.

Will give your suggestions some air, once I can work out where the initial
root of the problem is, cheers!

RDP, Citrix, and other such "interactive" network applications are
really sensitive to latency. Roaming profiles, folder redirection,
and other classic "file server applications" are all about bulk data
transfer. Those are just about opposite goals. It's entirely
possible the one is causing trouble with the other.

If you've got a managed switch that does QoS, you might want to
consider implementing a scheme that gives your Citrix traffic priority
over the SMB traffic. If you don't have that, simply putting the
Citrix stuff on a dedicated NIC (with a different IP address) and
dedicated switch port might help. (*Might.* I'm guessing, and a lot
of this kind of thing depends on the specifics of the situation.)
