We use it here for all of our laptops. Have not had a need to do a
trace on a stolen unit yet though. It's about $30 per laptop and comes
installed on our Lenovos so all I need to do is activate it. $30 isn't
very much considering the cost of the laptop.

Yes, but risk management can be like that. You look at the probability
of a particular problem and the impact of such a problem. A stolen
laptop is relatively high probability, and from what I've read they are
most often pawned to pay for drugs. But, if sensitive customer or
employee data is lost, that can cost the company a lot of money even if
the hard drive is reformatted and the data never seen.

One of our lost machines was used by a corporate attorney and contained
email messages that were extremely expensive to recreate. That required
restoring many tape backups in hope of finding some of those messages. I
never did hear just how successful they were. The lawyer did learn from
the experience not to use a local PST, no matter how convenient that
was.

That is the funny part everyone leaves out when talking about
“datatheft” is that the vast majority of the time when a laptop or
computer is stolen (even with critical data) the people stealing it are
not thinking about your data but the money they will make from simply
selling the hardware. But harddrive encryption vendors are making hand
over fist for that what if one in a million problem everyone in the IT
security rags seem to be up in arms about.

In my last job we used it for a few years, then dropped it. It didn't
help recover any of the few stolen laptops during that time, and we
frequently had installation problems. I lost track of how many updates
they sent me during the initial project, somewhere around a half dozen.
All of those issues were things I can't believe were first detected at
our company, but the fixes were written in response to my bug reports.
