I'm a huge fan of "tell me about a time that you" questions. They can
reveal a lot about the way a person thinks and behaves under a multitude
of conditions. By asking them to tell you about their experiences, they
often rattle off tangential details that are unrelated to the question,
but in themselves are much more revealing.

"Tell me about a time when you were asked to solve a problem that was a
PEBKAC error."

The answer may reveal anything from troubleshooting skills to people
skills. Of course it may reveal nothing, but often people will spill
lots of unintended nuggets about themselves when they are telling a
story about themselves.

"Tell me about a time that you were working on a project, and things
didn't turn out like you expected." Maybe you learn what types of
projects are outside their skill set, and what makes them take on tasks
they are unsuited for.

"Tell me about a time that you had to come up with a creative solution
for handling a difficult client" Maybe you learn whether they are
unreasonable themselves in their customer service attitude.

We are interviewing for a desktop support position - not an "entry
level" spot, but someone with a couple years experience. I would LOVE to
have a clever, unexpected, yet relevant-to-the-position question. Do you
guys have anything I can use?
