Hi All,
I've got a bit of a problem to solve regarding our backup regime and I wanted to ask you guys about some of the basic principles of backup. We currently have a tape system that takes 600/1200Gb tapes. However, we have about 1.2TB (and slowly rising) to back up and the compression ratio is never 1:2 so we end up running over two tapes for most backups, stuffing up our nice robotic library. I don't want to drop down to incremental backups as I simply don't trust every tape in a sequence to be error free! Buying the next step up in tape drives (so we can look at backing up 1.5TB per tape) is very expensive so I'm not keen on that either - unless there really is no other way! I still operate by the standard grandfather, father, son regime - i.e. Monday to Thursday backups for 2 weeks, the last 4 (or 5 depending on the month) Fridays and Monthly backups. I'm thinking of changing this so that we can backup all of our data each time over 2 tapes, meaning that we can keep the current robotic library and tape drives, but need to reduce the number of days that we actually back up. This would mean, say, looking at having backups for the previous 5 days, the previous 2 Fridays before that and then the previous month end backups. What's your experience in this? What are your regimes and are there better standard ones I can be following? Sorry for length of post!! Cheers, Andy.
