I try to stay out of the browser war conversations, but I would add that
lots of SharePoint sites with high functionality still use ActiveX controls.
That is a rather key factor.

It's my opinion (always possible it's completely wrong) that whatever
problems SharePoint has with browser compatibility (and I'm somewhat
skeptical as to how many there are since a large part of Microsoft's web
site is now running on SharePoint and it works with most other browsers), is
due to trying to stay compatible with IE which admittedly has never been
"standard". I think that once IE8 gets out the door and is compliant
(crossing fingers as I type it), then SharePoint won't have to worry about
keeping the non-standard pieces alive just to ensure 100% functionality with
IE.
Again just a theory,
Tim

If you consider how many companies in the past screwed themselves by
being locked into the Lotus Notes framework, you would be wise to make
such considerations about other limited-compatibility products as
well.

Even if Lotus Notes worked for you, there was a continuous financial
investment that likely could have been better invested elsewhere at a
certain point.

I'm not nay-saying the value of Sharepoint, but Kurt makes a point
that you should consider. Microsoft's continued stance in not
supporting browser compatibility is quite shortsighted.

I know from security testing that I would definitely prefer my users
to use Firefox. I wish I could be complacent in the use of IE, but its
just not practical in my organization where I have to allow my users
to investigate information online.

This directly translates to home use - which is where the majority of
the worlds phishing/trojan/zombie issues now lay.
