Not running Norton, running McAfee...

But If I ever get this system back, I will download SP3 and then disable
McAfee

Are you running AV at the time you do the upgrade?

I have seen numerous threads on the Internet about download of IE7.
which is apart of SP3, and Norton being the root of the problem.

Take a look

Has not happened to me, but MS provides free support for Service packs
and patches.

I was attempting to install the Windows XP SP3 on my laptop and got the
following error:

"The file or directory c:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable. Please
run the Chkdsk utility."

I backed out of SP3 and run chkdsk and found nothing, on reboot; I
received an error that there was no Paging File. I attempted to
recreate it but I still get the error on reboots.

I am also still getting the c:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable.

Has anyone else had this problem with SP3 and found a workaround. From
Google, it appears to be an IE7 issue, but I don't have IE7 installed.

Thanks in advance for any help,
