Eww, a whole OS and binaries just for that? Get ThinStation and simply pxe boot a super small image with a default app of firefox, add vnc as an app.
This would be like a 10 minute setup start to end. All your config would sit in a dhcp conf file and a tftp directory. You can migrate this to and from any server (even windows) if had to in minutes. LTSP is pretty cool, but way more overhead and config than you need for *your* application. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 9:58 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: Free PXE Boot Server My Goal is to make it so they boot, and open a webpage via active desktop or a page in Firefox, as well as have VNC enabled. >From there, they just sit there and are only used as displays. On the image side, I want to put in a drive, build the machine in either Ubuntu or XP. Once it's how I want it, make an image of it. Put the image on a server. Take out hard drive. Have it boot via PXE from that image. Any changes will obviously be lost on boot, but that's where the web page will come in as it can be controlled & changed. My idea was something simple like Fog, but it doesn't seem to let you boot from an image you made to it. You can do: -diskless linux with an nfs moutned root -diskless windows (only some flavours) with an iSCSI or AoE mounted system volume. -simply pxe load a small kernel into ram and run linux right from ram, I did this with rdesktop for net booted thin clients. I would like to use them as displays. They all have network, ram, but no hard drives. I also have a spare server. Is there an open source, or free solution where I can run a server, put my own images on it, and it will allow each laptop boot a different image via PXE based on MAC? Thanks?!
