Well, that never came up. I planned to share the files out from our
combination DC / file server machines. That is how I planned to control
access, etc.

Thanks for this. Are these just the backend systems? Is there a software
layer included to create and manage policies for automatically moving files
to the appropriate tier? (Or is that something that's out of the league I'm
trying play in?)

Sure. a local IBM reseller (Dynamix Group http://www.dynamixgroup.com)
offered me three different solutions:
1) IBM DS3300 iSCSI SAN with 6 x 500 GB SATA drives, dual controllers, 2 TB
usable space for just under $12,000

2) IBM System Storage N3300 Model A20, 10 x500 GB SATA drives for just under
$15,000

3) IBM System Storage N3300 Model A10, 10 x500 GB SATA drives for just under
$9000

Trust me when I tell you the prices are VERY close to the rounded numbers. J

Dell offered the following for just a hair over $4000:

I just got off the phone with another vendor in the Atlanta area who sells
HP, and some others. He's going to work me up a quote based on what I told
him I wanted (about 2 TB storage, as much hardware redundancy in the box as
possible, low-price <G> and data de-dup) and I should be getting an email in
the next day or two about that.

As I mentioned, I have two vendor meets next week to talk about what they
have to offer. I expect to get some proposals then and I'll pass along what
I can.

Thanks for the reply,

Can you share the vendors and the product bundles they presented?

Well, I'm somewhat in the same situation you are. I'm looking at 2-3
Terabytes of NAS/SAN storage. I've got a couple different quotes, going as
low as about $4500.00 all the way up to about $15000 for a nice big SAN with
data de-dup built in. And all with redundant hardware built-in. I've got a
meeting with two regional vendors next week to see what they can offer and
for how much.

Personally, I *really* like the IBM quote for about $14-15,000.

Significantly less.

I don't really have a budget. It's more one of those situations where I
have a need that should be addressed before things get out of hand. I'm
just beginning the process of learning what's out there on the lower end and
thinking about an initial proposal to the money types.

Anyone have any thoughts about or experiences with tiered storage
solutions for smaller shops (<100 users and <5 TB of storage on file
servers)?

I'm just beginning to poke around these waters and thought I'd ask here
first.

Thanks,
