After a total of five non-returned calls, (my boss even called the General =
Manager and VP of Adobe System's Creative Suite Design & Web Segments, whic=
h got us exactly one return call from a "senior" tech who after 3 minutes s=
aid he' have to escalate it to the server team), a lot of cussing at Adobe =
and working our own angle, we were able to recover 100% of the data....with=
out any help from Adobe.
The setup: Version Cue CS4 installed to its default location similar to the=
below.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\CS4\Server
By default it's data lives here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\CS4\Data
Apparently Adobe expects this app to run on workstation OS's because who's =
server is going to have C: as the largest logical drive? Using Adobe's admi=
n tool to change the data folder to D:\Data, Adobe apparently copies some c=
onfig structure or files, it's not simply a re-point.
When CS4 is installed, it creates a systray icon/shortcut and a Control Pan=
el shortcut that is used to start the Version Cue server. These are more th=
an just shortcuts to the .EXE in the \bin folder, because using those short=
cuts, Version Cue run but not in the current user session (you do not get t=
he below box, this way it runs even when nobody is logged in). If you click=
on the .EXE in the \bin folder, you see a command windows with Version Cue=
running.
Apparently when you the overwrite D:\Data .... files with your own files f=
rom a file-level backup, whatever the built-in connection between the systr=
ay / Control Panel and the \bin *.EXE was is now broken. However, launching=
from the \bin folder does launch the server and it does recognize the data=
you have restored. Go figure.
This concludes the second worst week in my 20-year IT career, at least the =
end result was positive!

This sounds reasonable to me, but then again nothing else in this
unfortunate nightmare seems reasonable so far...
On the bright side of the fence, if you figure out how to recover
everything you could sell disaster recovery services for several
hundred bucks / GB and make a small fortune saving other folks' bacon.
Anyway, it goes without saying that you absolutely need a non-writable
copy of that MySQL db archived somewhere. And for goodness sake, do
the same for the E:\Data backup.
Best of luck with it.
