They are not.

I did delete all the manually created entries, and only re-entered
half of them (i.e., I entered connections to the DCs for the parent
domain, and only 1 DC in the child domain). So far, I see no
"automatically generated" entries, except to the other DC in the same
site. AD hasn't created a connection to the other DCs.

Shouldn't it be creating a connection to other DCs, in other sites?
It's not; it's just creating a connection to the other DC in the same
site.
