Hey Malcolm thanks for the link. It does a really good job of explaining how
music rights work, and like you said, it was a quick read.

It basically says that if you own a radio station or if you're an aerobics
instructor or street musician, you have to pay something. In some cases it's
not a ton, but it's something!

Again, a short yet really informative article.

Thanks again Malcolm,

-Marty

It still technically requires a licensing agreement, no matter what hardware
is being used.

This is a good, quick write-up:

Just get a cheap MP3 player and connect it to your PBX.

As for the legalities, it is illegal to use terrestrial radio as MOH.
When you go to Sirius/XM's station, they partner with this company:

In other words, you can probably get away with playing it yourself (I go
to a Schlotsky's restaurant nearby that does it), but as far as
legalities, you're probably on a slippery slope.

The Internet stream DOES time out after a certain amount of inactivity.
Your best best is to get an actual radio with an inside dock and plug it
into your phone system.

Stupid question, been wanting to do this for years and Management
finally told me to do it. Anyway, say I sign up for the Sirius internet
streaming and just plunk an old laptop on the top of the PBX rack. Does
the internet stream ever time out or will it stay on indefinitely?
Would be kind of hard to put a physical unit in, would have to get an
antenna outside. Noticed they also have a tabletop radio that uses
internet connection for it's feed. Suppose that would work also if the
feed never times out.
Thanks
