Be advised that along with the test and certification, you should also
receive full documentation with the complete test results.

Very good baseline info should there be problems down the road.

It'll work if your switches do an automated crossover.

However, your cabling vendor screwed up and they need to fix and
recertify every single drop they've done for you like that. IMNSHO, any
serious structured cabling contractor will use a CAT5/5e/6/7 etc cable
certifier that does WAY more than a simple continuity test. While a $50
or $100 Siemens continuity checker is great for a quick and dirty
inspection, nothing compares to certification.

If your vendor isn't certifying your cable drops when they are
installed, IMHO, you need to find a new vendor. They are possibly
violating all kinds of cabling rules, not to mention possibly creating
all kinds of NEC violations.

Yes, it's just a continuity tester. Not checking A or B. It doesn't
even test for cross-over. I needed to plugged one in to get the
pattern.

They definitely crossed the cables. They connected to the patch panel
the same as all my other (B) connections, but the wall jack termination
is A. So it makes sense that it tests as a cross.

Doesn't seem like it should work, but I've been told it does.

Ummm. If the tester is just checking continuity and it's not checking
568a or b, then they most likely crossed the cables. If it's actually
checking whether it's A or B, then you might need to change something on
the tester since continuity is a 1 to 1 test.

Without knowing the model of the tester I can't help you more than that.

Subject: basic wiring question

All of our network jacks are terminated using the 568B standard. I use
a Paladin Tools cable checker to trouble-shoot any wire/connection
issues. Everything is good when the light on the cable tester blinks on
1 thru 8 in order. If it misses a number I know something is amiss.

Last week we hired a firm to run some new wires and they terminated the
jacks using the 568A standard.

Although we aren't experiencing any issues with these new connections
(but it's possible none are being used yet), my cable tester blinks in
this order: 36145278. Same as a cross-over cable.

I know my patch cables can be terminated either way as long as both ends
are done the same, but having the cabling in the rooms as cross-over?

Is this really a problem?

If not, it's going to suck having to remember that 36145278 is ok when
checking connections with this tester.

Thanks,

Paul
