Almost any PCL/PS driver will print to almost any PCL/PS printer
regardless of vendor or model. Indeed, that's a common
trouble-shooting step: "Try using the HP LaserJet 4 PCL driver that
came with the OS and see if it works when the printer manufacturer's
doesn't." That's the point of a page description language like PCL,
after all -- to make page description independent of the specific
model printer. These "universal drivers" basically just take that
concept and run with it.

Generally speaking, universal drivers do work, especially for simple
printing. When you get into multi-function or advanced features
(e.g., stapling), you may face limitations.

All our HP printers are using a hacked HP LJ 4 driver from Win XP.
It works better than anything HP's coughed up over the past few years.
(We had to hack it to force 600 DPI for recent HP LJ's which crash if
given a 300 DPI job.)
