If you have a laptop (or other unit that isn't showing this symptom) with a
removable drive, swap drives.  My suspicion is that it is a hardware
problem...  I had this problem with a laptop and they ended up replacing the
drive, but they wanted me to test it to ensure it wasn't a controller.
