Others have answered the main point of your question. Just thought I'd
throw in a quick "beware" with moving up the SP tree in Office 2k ...
you'll introduce the Outlook protection that stops other applications
from accessing the address book/mail functionality without prompt.
Non-issue in a simple environment, but if you have (badly written) apps
that depend on nicking Outlook's functionality to send mail or
synchronise with it, then the users will get a rather annoying prompt
everytime it happens unless you do a reg hack. Hopefully if it's running
unpatched Office 2k, it's not able to get to the Internet at all!

That aside, this is why I don't use small businesses unless I pay in
cash and leave no contact details. Too bloody tight to pay for a new
app in 11 years!? Give me a break. I'm hoping from your description
that it's just one or two machines kept on for some legacy reason
(surely that's a problem that can be solved?!), but if not, the very
least they could do is go Open Source.

For those that keep their heads in the sand on issues like this (I know
of a few), it is a huge disservice to their staff and customers to
provide such a simple compromise vehicle into their business and I very
much doubt any other controls they have in place mitigate this risk
adequately (if they did, I'm sure they could afford the upgrade in the
first place!).

Rant over! ;o)

Hi All

a long shot i know

just been out to see a client and set him up a new laptop etc.

his desktop, which he wants to keep, is running Office 2000 with no
updates applied

i need to get it to SP3 so that i can use the Compatibility Pack for
Office 2007/2010 so that he can swap files between his 2 machines

however it's not readily available on the MS site and all other sites
point to a 166kb installer file which does not run correctly

anybody have a copy of the the full administrator's version of SR1 that
they would like to publish somewhere?

thanks

Laurence
