If they are using Office 2010 (not sure about 2007) then they may have to right click on the file and select properties, In the General tab at the very bottom (shows up under Attributes if it's available) it may have a Security section.
Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer. Click the Unblock button. If they have an older version of Office your wife could do a "save as" and select an older version of office or they might need to install a compatibility pack.
