Assuming a windows environment, Shadow copy could help here too.  The interval 
would have to be more frequent, but would allow user restoration to multiple 
versions.

Ah now that sounds perfect.  I don't think the issue is that a nightly backup 
is insufficient longer term, just that the owners of the document (it's being 
updated all day) are twitchy if someone has finger trouble or it corrupts 
itself about how recent a version they could revert to/how much data they'd 
lose.

Another option is SyncBack.  It has versioning built into it.
