Cacti is a graphing tool that will perform the same job as MRTG, but
once you get it up and running it is entirely web-based and much
friendlier for those that have few or no Linux/*BSD skills.

If you use VMware ESX/ESXi for virtualization you can easily download a
pre-made virtual machine that will get you up and running quickly:

Also, be aware that MRTG and Cacti are *graphing* solutions, not general
purpose monitoring solutions. Any sort of altering is outside of the
defined program scope.
