I kind of just did this by booting to a Ubuntu cd and mounted the drive.
Before Linux I could sometimes see partitions and sometimes not.  Linux let
me see what was there you might want to give this a try.  Don't know if
someone did something to kill the partitions if it would allow you access or
not but maybe worth a try.
