if you cannot boot from a MacOS
8 installation CD then you will not be able to boot from any CD.
There aren't any linux installation CDs available that can be booted on
a PowerBook 5300.
Do you know that in order to boot from a CD you have to keep the "c"
key pressed while powering on/restarting until the CD is booted?
If the "c" key doesn't work try "Command + Option + Shift + Delete".
("Command" is the Apple key and "Option" the "alt" key)
Thanks!
It works!
I can boot Macos 8 cd, but... can't boot any other linux cd I have:
Debian Woody /ppc
Debian Sarge /ppc
Gentoo 2005.1 for ppc
YDL 2.0
Mklinux Miboot cd
Why?
Why I can't boot any linux cd I have downloaded and burned?
On of cd's, gentoo cd downloaded my friend, and he showed me that when he opens cd with UltraIso software, program claims that iso isn't bootable...
I think it may be because cd is for powerpc?
MiBoot CD I have downloaded with wget, and wrote it on a friend's cd writer under windoes with Nero.
Nero claimed that iso image isn't correct, and suggest correct or ingore that issue.
I selected "ignore" because I am sure I have transferred downloaded iso to windows computer without any loss.
Debian Woody cd was downloaded with wget, and I burned it with k3b, I am very sure on it!
Sarge cd downloaded with wget and burned on friends computer with Nero.
Main question is how to boot to linux from cd ? Why I can't boot lnux cd but able to boot macos cd?

Thank you very much for that link! It really helps, I made a bootable floppy from it and Mac can boot from it! I partitioned disk, and tried to install macos 8 on one partition hoping it will help install linux.
Anyway, I can't install minimal macos 8 because when booting from cd installer complains that there are insufficient memoryto install it, needed abuot 700 kb but there are only 70 available.
I can't install macos 8 when booting from that floppy, because installer tell me he can't copy some informaition to disk, and asks me what to do: Stop, Skip or Try Again.
I can try to install MacOs 7.3.3, and do something like I have read in this ( http://www.webservertalk.com/archive239-2005-4-958864.html ) article.
But I am not sure how to create floppy from it.
I have stuffit expander on my pc/linux, so I can unstaff it, for example in the first .bin file there are three files:
System 7.5.3 01of19.smi.info
System 7.5.3 01of19.smi.data
System 7.5.3 01of19.smi.rsrc
One or two days ago I tried to write .data file to floppy...
It didn't boot...
I have transferred it to floppy twice.
Once with dd if=System 7.5.3 01of19.smi.data of=/dev/fd0 and second time with
dd if=System 7.5.3 01of19.smi.data of=/dev/fd0 bs=84 skip=1
That floppy didn't boot so I supposed that I did something wrong.
I can't try to install 7.5.3 from prepared floppy when booted from disk tools foppy because whn I eject disk tools floppy to insert macos installation 1st floppy system force me to insert disk tools floppy ;)
When I am trying to biit from macos 8 cd and run 7.5.3 installer I wrote to floppy with dd system brings a message that disk isn't readable with mac and propose to format it :)
So, second question is how to write floppy image properly from .bin file?
And third question is what to do after reinstalling macos 7.5.3 from scratch? How can I transfer linux to another partition from cd?
Anyway, again I prefer not to deal with macos at all.
I want to boot linux and install linux from linux
Thanks
