I usually boot the Debian installer, choose to load the installer
components from the CD (this implies that ext2fs-utils are loaded) and
then switch to a shell.

Then I manually invoke the repair process:
fsck.ext3 /dev/discs/...
                     ^^
                   To be replaced by your root partition.
