Sorry to keep adding messages, but there's something else you should know: If the Mini-DIN 8 connector you obtain is part of an adapter for any Palm PDA, you do not need to do anything. The adapter already has the connections I listed below inside it. It will work with any PC serial device, as long as the data speed setting is reasonable. PC serial ports are asynchronous-only, but Mac serial ports are capable of both synchronous and asynchronous operation. The synchronous operation is required for higher serial speeds on the Mac. However, this adapter will limit the port to asynchronous operation only, like a real PC serial port, which will be OK for you, since Linux does not support synchronous operation of Mac serial ports anyway.
