I must point out, this is a laptop, so connecting a second IDE disk is
not straightforward. (I'm not even sure how to get access to the
first/only disk; there are no obvious access panels.) Thanks for the 
idea, however.

I don't see why nubus-pmac shouldn't be able to support an NFS root--- 
the Ethernet device here is already supported, and that's the hardest 
part. Unfortunately, the kernel on the distributed images does not 
appear to have NFS-root support compiled in :(  I may have to give 
tftpboot a try....
