I was (like a dummy) using the 2.4.27 kernel. Shortly after I emailed the list, it hit me what I'd done, replaced it with the 2.4.30+PB1 kernel, rebooted, and life was sweet. Now I just have to get a bigger HD (using a 750MB drive right now... talk about teeny!)
I got fluxbox to work quite happily with the fbdev drivers and short of sound (I read up on the whole AWACS / DMA channel thing.. no idea on that short of disassembling the ROM) and have been trying to learn the 2.6 kernel bits in my spare time (which management has decided I appearently had 5 minutes free each day, so they tossed me 2 more projects.) Anyhow, I even have my PCMCIA card working and Debian 3.1 is in good shape for the moment. Once I get a larger hard drive, I'll start actively trying to help out with getting this stuff working under 2.6.
