Check the dilate code example how they process vertical and then the horizontal 
lines.
Try to work on line basis but for some operations that's not possible.
If it's not possible then you can create a buffer in open and access that in 
the engine.

I'm still hoping for better documentation and better examples (with comments) 
for the 6.3 release.
