I don't understand why this code would be very complex at all in v1.

It should be exactly like vertex shading in CG.  Assign a color value to each 
point, then the values interpolate (linear, sin, cos, etc.) to the surrounding 
points.

A grid with such assignment capability would be a good starting point.  After 
that works, apply the result to Bezier or Roto Spline matte points.
