ok. just received a mail from support. here we go:
Bug 35028 - Expression does not update label until frame change
I also cross-referenced that bug to this one:
Bug 9630 - Expressions in labels don't always re-evaluate
Development may determine that the root cause is the same.

submitted. will post the bug # once i received it.

If in doubt, report it.
The more people report a problem the more it will get bumped up in
priority.
Especially important if it's a seemingly minor issue like this one.

i've been experienciing the same more or less forever.
i agree that it's pretty annoying to have to frame step just to get
the labels to update.
bug id anyone?

not always. In heavy scripts they often fail to update making
dynamic node labels unreliable

Nodes usually update when you change to next frame right? At
least that works for the example you mentioned. and some other
nodes labels that depends on scripts, they updated values when
you move to another frame on viewer too.

Hi,
Does anyone know of a way to make an expression in a StickyNote
label get evaluated automatically? Currently, any expression
that
is typed in the StickyNote label field seems to get evaluated
only when the label field itself is changed. For instance, if I
put something like [value BackdropNode1.label] into the
StickyNote's label field, it gets evaluated when I first type it
in. If I then change the BackdropNode's label value, the
StickyNote label does not change. I can force it to update if I
do something like hit the Return key in the StickyNote label
field. In contrast, that's not how the message field of a Text
node behaves. It seems to always be "live" and evaluates any
linked expression that is changed.
Anyone know an easy way to get the StickyNote's label field
to be
more like the Text node's message field, in terms of evaluating
expressions "live"? Or, is that just the way the StickyNote node
works - or the way "labels", in general, work…?
Thanks for any help,
Rich
