I'm on osx 10.6.8 and it seems the issue was mostly related to an old Wacom
pen that I was using that was registering extra clicks when I would release
the button. I'm on a brand new Wacom now and the problem seems to be fixed.
The MMB click fit to screen functionality still exists, but is no longer
happening unexpectedly.
