iDistort works fine for me. I use this technique all the time. But remember to turn on motion blur. Also... if you plan to use it close up then it is best to separate leaves from the branches or it won't look realistic. Maybe use a simple grid transform if you need branches to move.
Somtimes is quicker just to set up some trees in maya paint effects and add a wind. Is super fast to do and no special maya skills required.
