Maybe I declared success too soon... The build / install of numpy seems to 
work (using MS C++ / Intel Fortran), but upon trying to import numpy I get:

  File "C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\numpy\linalg\__init__.py", line 47, in 
<module>
    from linalg import *
  File "C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\numpy\linalg\linalg.py", line 22, in 
<module>
    from numpy.linalg import lapack_lite
ImportError: DLL load failed: Invalid access to memory location.

   To make matters more interesting, a second attempt leads to something 
different:

>>> from numpy import *

AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'core'
