great effort, as this will make the "sounds interesting, let's try out"
phase much easier and more affordable for many people.
You correctly demand the automation (as I'd otherwise worry problems with
quick development and binary builds lagging behind.) I haven't used it
personally, but only tool I'm aware offering something similar is
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_Service_cross_distribution_howto

Note: Maybe instead of aiming at providing binary distributions,
"packaging" (creating a pkg for the distribution's package manager) would
be easier step first.

The distro choice, debian (ubuntu) and RH (fedora) (or more rpm/apt based
distros) seem about right for a start to me.
