yep, looks like your build might be wrong.

The error: set NUPIC to the path where you install nupic first, then rerun
the installation, eg
export NUPIC=/home/tom/myNupic

To run tests and validate nupic install, see
https://github.com/numenta/nupic/wiki/Installing-and-Building-NuPIC
you can skip the instalation part and see how to run the tests there. Until
the tests pass, it's pointless to try going further with NuStudio

@Matt: how does he execute tests from "pip install"-install? that way, the
$NUPIC is not known (easily, that is)
