Wow Julian, I absolutely agree! I believe as you do, that a Singularity's reaction to us will be based on our interaction with it - also that the fear-mongers (i.e. Elon et al) could act as self fulfilling prophecies.
One thing that "tempers" my sense of caution is the almost limitless possibilities that AIs will have regarding habitable worlds - which makes me think that the lower bound of their behavior will be benign indifference. Why fret when you can leave and go millions of light years elsewhere? Another is that I also believe that there is an ineffable connection to all living things. I don't mean in some vague; metaphysical; la-la-land; hippie sunshine, kind of way - but ACTUAL causal connection linking the inseparable prosperity if one living thing to another. What profits one, profits all, in other words. I think an AI having cognitive processes with no speed boundary, having attained a certain wisdom, will know this.
