Have you checked the man page for upsset.conf?
Can you try on the command line with upsrw?
I thought that it would use one of the users from the upsd.users file. But
neither one of these nor the nut user will work.
Do those users (in upsd.users) have monitor privileges? I think that's
a step up from just being able to see values with upsc.
