Arnaud,

I've fixed the user, group issue, thanks for catching it.

Along the same lines, the manual, sec. 6, says

-----------------------------
Create the state path directory for the driver(s) and server to use for storing UPS status data and other auxiliary files, and make it owned by the user you created.

mkdir -p /var/state/ups
chmod 0770 /var/state/ups
chown root:nut /var/state/ups
-----------------------------

Shouldn't "root" be "ups" here?

Finally, I did a "reboot -- -r", for good measure. The problem persists however:

wiley$ pfexec /opt/nut/2.6.1/bin/upsdrvctl start
Network UPS Tools - UPS driver controller 2.6.1
Network UPS Tools - Generic HID driver 0.35 (2.6.1)
USB communication driver 0.31
No matching HID UPS found
Driver failed to start (exit status=1)
wiley$

Ok, I've made some progress. Now

    wiley$ pfexec /opt/nut/2.6.1/bin/usbhid-ups -DD -a
    eco550 -u root

    shows
