The Nutch software as it stands is useable, so I guess we're already at a beta. What we need now is organizations that are committed to deploying it and will help provide the finishing touches to take it from its current beta form to that of a more polished system.

Development is proceeding, although somewhat slower. Initially development was largely funded by Overture. That funding has diminished. Now principal development is by volunteer contributors. Such contributions are unpredictable and to a degree dependent on organizations adopting Nutch for their search needs. This will take time, but, long-term, is a healthier way for an open source project to evolve.

I am currently writing a summary piece on emerging types of search engines, and wished to check on the status of Nutch. Is development still proceeding? Do you have an estimated time frame for a Beta product?

Thanks for any assistance with this.
