The easiest way of doing what your asking for is to use Luke, which is a 
diagnostic tool for Lucene indexes.
 
You can download Luke, and find out more information about it here: 
http://www.getopt.org/luke/.
 
Its easy to use, and once you load your index into it you can preform searches 
independently from Nutch. It has many other interesting and useful features 
also.

How can I obtain a list of all the items in the nutch database, once
they've been imported?  How about retrieving a specific one?

I'm getting a total hits of 0, much like what Bettina reports, so I'd
like to verify that the items have indeed been fetched, and which ones
as well.
