Where did you get your file? I just try with a lastbuild (http://lucene.zones.apache.org:8080/hudson/job/Nutch-Nightly/lastStableBuild/artifact/trunk/build/nutch-2007-05-02_06-52-53.tar.gz ) and no problem using $ tar xf nutch-2007-05-02_06-52-53.tar.gz (tar (GNU tar) 1.15.91 / Ubuntu)
