If you reboot an EC2 instance by rebooting the OS or through Amazon's
ec2-reboot-instances tool, your data will be intact *if* there are no
problems during the reboot. If your instance kernel panics or the
underlying hardware has trouble, you'll lose your data. So, keep safe
copies of your indices in S3 and consider the copies on EC2 disposable.

The lack of persistent storage in EC2 meant that I would have to back

Is that really the case? To my understanding, it's just that there
are no
guarantees that the data is safe, just like with a single server where
your hard disk may crash.
