The two that you want to go to the most.

I'm not being facetious, I'm serious.

There are lots of conferences out there and some of them will make you go "Wow,
I want to go to that" because your gut instinct is saying the content,
attendees and format are ones that you respond well to.

RubyConf and RailsConf both look great on paper, but why would I want to go the
expense if I can see the videos online later? Or even whilst they're happening?
Is it to be in the same room as some people infamous within the community? That
makes about much sense as wanting to spend an evening stroking Will's hair
because DHH is his boss... (now I've said that, the awkward evening we spent
together in Common is likely to make more sense to Will...)

Therefore I am unlikely to break out my personal credit card for either, but
I'm more likely to fund a trip to something nearer to home with people going
I'm more likely to end up working with one day.

This year I'll do RubyManor, and I'm helping behind the scenes with RubyConf
England, so I expect to be at that (watch this space - it sounds like it's
going to be ace). The rest, I'm too busy for so will watch online where I can.

Also, if somebody had a choice between spending a weekend at a conference and a
weekend scratching that itch and working on that idea that won't go away, I'd
tell them the value is probably in scratching the itch unless the idea is very
weak.

The most important thing is that you spend your downtime doing and creating
things that interest you rather than just consuming other people's content,
IMHO. Whether that be watching TV or sitting in an auditorium, it's wasted time
unless you're going to apply it or there's something else wrapped around it
that gets you more connected to better ideas.
