dented42 confirmed that the question is solved:
never mind, i did a stupid thing.
instead of appending a path to the variable 'rng-schema-locating-files'
, I set it to a list containing a path, thereby wiping out what it was
previously, therfore emacs didn't know where to find the xhtml schema.
i shall now bow my head in shame.
