You're correct that Radio Shack RG-58 isn't going to cut it - too much loss.
Find someone (perhaps on this list) who will sell you a length of Times
Microwave
LMR-400 and two connectors. In bulk (500 ft) this coax cost between 40 and 50
cents per foot so a 30-ft length will run around $15. The connectors run
around
$6 each. Your total costs will be:
Antenna (say a 12 dBi panel) about $50.
Coax about $27
Pigtail (to connect card to coax) about $25.
Total is about $102.
If you want to reduce the costs further (and if you have the time) consider
building a
Pringles Can antenna instead of buying the panel antenna.
