I don't think they are being ignored, simply dismissed as a poor option in
most cases, as are the PCI-PC Card adapters. 

Most, not all, but most desktops are located under a desk, against the wall
or in some other out of the way place. This tends to place the PC "box"  or
other office furniture between the antenna and AP. Not the most optimal
position. And because it is part of the PC, it is not easily repositioned to
better reception. Why give yourself that kind of headache?
