hi,

i'm setting up a community wireless project in the
east village, and the time has come to put out an open
call for feedback and/or assistance.

the project is called Neighbornode. its basic unit is
an open wireless gateway placed in an apartment
window. the gateway uses a captive portal to send new
log-ons to a bulletin board website where residents of
that neighborhood can post messages and communicate
with each other. the board is only accessible through
the gateway, so it becomes a space exclusively for
residents of that street (who live within wireless
range) to talk with each other.

this basic unit is repeated over and over, with nodes
being set up on different streets, open to all
residents within range of the node. each street has
its own bulletin board.

these boards are then networked together, and messages
can be passed from one board to the next. in this way
a message can make its way from street to street, the
entire length of the network.

anyone who wants can add themselves to this network by
opening a gateway and adding themselves to the central
database. this way, the network can spread on its
own, without requiring a central authority.

i've currently got one gateway up, on 4th st, and will
soon have one on 2nd and 5th.

if anyone has any feedback on the project, or if
anyone has an open node they would like to put a
Neighbornode on and add to the network, please let me
know.

you can check out the site at
http://www.neighbornode.net. to log into an unused
bulletin board, enter '1234'. this will take you to
E. 6th street, which doesn't really exist yet. feel
free to post there.

the project is part of anthony townsend's wireless
public spaces class at ITP.

thanks

john geraci
