Monday morning, 30 November, 2009 - Queens County, New York City
The Ash-throated Flycatcher first found by Rudy Badia of NYC was still
present on the 9th day after its discovery, at the same location in
Queens off N. Conduit Ave. & Cohancy Street in the Howard Beach area,
very near the site of Aqueduct Racetrack, and an "A" subway train
station, for Aqueduct-N. Conduit Ave. On an increasingly gray and
ultimately wet Monday morning, a watch for the flycatcher was
successful only after the serendipitous arrival of John Shemilt, who
spotted the flycatcher rather quickly, accompanied by Dr. Claude Bloch
and then afterwards, myself. The flycatcher was working mid-height
(at above eye-level) in the small lot just north of the "red
building", and on the NE corner of Cohancy St. close to N. Conduit
Ave. When last viewed as raindrops began around 11 a.m., the bird
was right by the elevated subway platform next to that lot and indeed
could have been seen well from the platform (had someone been looking
from there). Not noted was an Orange-crowned Warbler which had been
seen with some regularity, occasionally very nearby the Ash-throated.
In the several blocks surrounding this site mainly to the west & north
there seemed to be few other native birds besides a few American
Robins. I thank these two birders who were in on flycatcher-finding
this morning; Dr. Bloch for another kindness as well.

An early search (by me alone) at Riverside Park in Manhattan for
Sunday's Black-throated Blue Warbler was unsuccessful. I will try
looking in that area again. A thought of visiting Jamaica Bay on a
"swan chase" (as per the report of possible Tundra) was negated by the
steadier rain now falling in the city.
