Early Monday afternoon Bill Watson and I finally found the Avocet about 50-60
yards off shore in a flock of about 200 mostly Bonaparte Gulls. Shortly
afterwards the Avocet (originally spotted by David Neveu last week) swam to
shore between the Conservation Club and the power generating plant. It
waded/almost swam in the shallows feeding heavily on minnows. In a very short
ampount of time it caught and ate one medium and two large sized minnows. This
gives credence to Willie D'Anna's suggestion that the Avocet might possible
winter over here. The wind was blowing heavily offshore sometimes giving near
whiteout conditions near shore where the Avocet was feeding. The best approach
to the bird which stays on the west side of the Dunkirk Harbor is from Lake
Shore Drive (NY5) to the road neaxt to the Citigo gas bar then bear left into
the Conservation Club lower parking lot which is harborside. The bird has been
seen in the docks off Bart's Cove on the right associating with Mallards so
just look around. Lots of other waterfront bird feeding going on so enjoy from
the Central Avenue dock. The waterfront from Main St. east to Serval Street has
been shut down to the motoring public unfortunately. How Dunkirk existed for
over 100 years with out shutting down this lakefront drive is amazing. What are
the town fathers thinking???
