Not in NYC but in the northeast, a number of rare &/or extra-early birds were being reported, including a Sage Thrasher at Salisbury & Wilson's Plover on Nantucket, Massachusetts, along with NY state reports of Varied Thrush (via Hudson-Mohawk Birds list), a Townsend's Solitaire that no one seems to have relocated (was at Mohonk Preserve, eastern Ulster Co.), plus a couple of early (NJ & Mass.) sightings of Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

Saturday, 27 March, 2010 - Chilly with brisk north wind, preventing much movement but even so there were a few more of some of the migrant species seen in the week prior. Many migrants have also moved north. That is to say, many of the early "batch" of migrants in Manhattan such as the earliest flickers, phoebes, kinglets and some others cleared out. They'll all be followed by many more in the coming week, with warmer weather.

Sunday, 28 March - Along with the 'usual' fare at the reservoir, a modestly early N. Rough-winged Swallow - just a week or so "early" but a bit surprising on the day's chilly weather. This species has been reported in a few locations north of NYC already as well, & certainly on the early side any place in the New England or NY region, before April.

Monday, 29 March - Wet day & not much new; 3 Black-crowned Night- Herons in 3 locations, Meer, Turtle Pond, & (s. end) The Pond. Ring- necked Ducks (pair) continued on Meer. (No signs of any swallows this morning)

Tuesday 30 March - The heaviest rain of the year so far... not even ducks seem delighted by it, whereas a Wilson's Snipe in the center of the Sheep Meadow was likely there for the feast of 'worms', as were all the robins. (this was observed in mid-afternoon as a brief break came in the precip.) Trees and shrubs are all beginning to bud, with some in bloom. It could be well-greened and adorned with other color once the sun really shines.

Good birding,
